To many people, the word "outdoor kitchen" may seem like an oxymoron. Kitchens are better set up indoors, after all. How would one set up a stove, a microwave or any cooking appliance outside? Those in the know understand that an outdoor kitchen isn't necessarily a kitchen in the traditional sense, but something much more. Not only does it allow you to cook food outdoors, but it can allow you to use cooking methods you couldn't use in an indoor kitchen. These questions and answers are designed to inform you about outdoor kitchens, how you can make your own and how you can get the most enjoyment out of it.

What is an outdoor kitchen?

In earlier times, those of higher class generally had partially outdoor kitchens or at least a stove that could be cooked with outside. This kept the house from getting to hot during the summer. In these days of central heating and cooling, there is little need to worry about heat coming from cooking appliances. These days, outdoor kitchens tend to speak of grills and barbecues. While some people are satisfied to only bring the grill out every once in a while, many people choose to build an entire area around their grill. These areas are referred to as outdoor kitchens.

Does an outdoor kitchen have to be completely outdoors?

Outdoor kitchens most often tend to have some kind of structure around them, if for no other reason than to keep the rain from falling directly onto them. These structures can be temporary or permanent, but usually people turn their patios or porches into outdoor kitchens. Occasionally, however, an outdoor kitchen will be fully outdoors, which is completely acceptable. It all depends on your own personal wants and needs, which will vary depending on your climate, your space issues, how much money you want to spend on creation and many other factors that can't be quantified as easily.

How does an outdoor kitchen work?

Outdoor kitchens generally work just like regular indoor kitchens. You bring your materials outside or keep them outside in a refrigerator and use the counter area to prepare it. You then cook the food using the grill and the stove outlets, just like you would with your stove and oven inside. It's true that an outdoor kitchen tends to lend itself to different kinds of food than an indoor kitchen such as steaks and barbecue as opposed to casseroles and cakes, but that's generally the only difference

Where's the best place to install an outdoor kitchen?

In terms of property location, the best place is generally where your family would spend outdoor recreation time, either around a swimming pool or on your patio. In terms of area of the world, the best place is generally dry, moderate or hot areas of the country. If the area that you live in is covered in snow seven months out of the year, you likely won't have much time to enjoy your outdoor kitchen. However, if the area you live in is generally warm enough that you can comfortably spend time outdoors, you are probably in the perfect location.

Can I enjoy my outdoor kitchen at night?

Not only can you enjoy your outdoor kitchen at night, but you should make it a point to do so. Many of the places that sell outdoor kitchens also sell lighting packages, as well, in which they set up lighting fixtures that help set a mood and theme to the area. Of course, if these packages are too expensive for you, there's also the inexpensive area of doing it yourself. Flood lights, tiki torches and even Christmas lights can be used in the lighting process. It's your outdoor kitchen; you should find ways to make it comfortable and fun to enjoy.
