One of the most predominant images associated with outdoor cooking involves camping. Cooking over an open fire or on a small portable stove produced a bowl of lukewarm soup and a charred hot dog. This image does not have to be reality though. Outdoor cooking has grown in popularity for a variety of reasons, most of which have to do with the availability of good equipment for an outside kitchen.

The rusty old charcoal grill that you grew up with will soon be outdated. While there are still charcoal grills being developed, they are outfitted with features that allow for optimum heat control, have compartments for smoker chips, and have multiple cooking levels. If you are tired of waiting on charcoal, there is of course an entire industry built around the demand for gas grills. Some run on propane gas provided by a portable tank, while others use the natural gas that is used to heat your home. Whatever you choose, know that any grill that you buy today will be far superior to any grill that you may have owned in the past.

As the tools used in outdoor cooking have increased in quality, so have the recipes and ingredients used to prepare the food itself. Salt, pepper, and some ground beef no longer make up a grilled burger. Entire books and corners of the World Wide Web are now dedicated to outdoor cooking. Details on which smoked flavors taste the best with which meat and which spices to use to compliment various wine are just a few examples of the kind of information that is available. Outdoor cooking has become its own respected genre within the culinary community.

In addition to the newfound interest in the food and ingredients used in outdoor cooking, a massive new niche has erupted within the home improvement industry as well. The outdoor kitchen has become wildly popular in geographic regions where the climate is conducive to outdoor activities all year round. Fully furnished outdoor kitchens that feature everything from stainless steel implements to granite islands and countertops are beginning to grace backyard living spaces in neighborhoods around the country. These outdoor kitchens are places where families and communities can come together and enjoy being outside, without having to compromise the quality of their dining experiences.

Outdoor cooking provides a chance for you to exercise your freeform culinary skills. Use your imagination to come up with new and ingenious ways to cook classic dishes. Not only will your kids think you are amazing, but you may find some personal enjoyment in the creative process as well.
