High Definition Television - What You Need To Know About HDTV

Published By M. B. Aria

Once you start looking at images on an HDTV set, you will probably become entranced and perceive that you can actually see more than what is really being shown ...

If you do not have an HDTV yet, then it is perhaps time to make the switch. Why would you want to change your old television sets for an HDTV? The answer is very simple: an old television set does not have digital superiority. HDTV does.

HDTV's digital superiority is just one of the many fantastic features of this new digital technology. HDTV also highlights films with amazing detail. When it focuses on a certain object, that item seems to be magnified for you see it as if it is literally floating in front of you. Sounds pretty cool, huh?

HDTV also features progressive scanning and digital audio. This makes the entire experience feel balanced, since you cannot really enjoy great viewing if the sound is not really clear, can you? HDTV’s digital audio creates the impression that the person you are watching on your television set is sitting right beside you and the two of you are engaged in a conversation.

HDTV also eliminates ghost images. By ghost images, it doesn't mean that there are a number of friendly Caspers roaming around the screen. This refers to the "blur" that you sometimes see on traditional TV screens that makes images look like they are ghosts. The ghost images are not scary, but they can be definitely annoying to the viewers.

An FCC also mandates the switch and you are given an even wider viewing area. This means that you no longer need to sit all cramped up in front of the television set when you are watching programs with your friends just to have a good view of the movie. The screen seems to be stretched so you can watch from a distance, which is ideal when you are cooking dinner, as you can watch your favorite movie and cook at the same time. How is that for multitasking!

You can also experience greater enjoyment and satisfaction watching DVDs, because HDTVs have a better quality DVD playback. This is a great example of the convergence of "all in one" technologies.

Ordinary television sets are based on the aspect ratio of four to three (4:3). This ratio means that the television can be measured with approximately a height of three feet, and a width of four feet.

However, the aspect ratio of an HDTV is a whopping sixteen to nine (16:9). This makes the image an HDTV gives out much much wider! In fact, the screen size of an HDTV is thirty three percent wider!

The increased width indicates a significant improvement in viewing, since it permits you to watch TV sitcoms and movies that you like, as if you were watching them in the cinema, minus any loud snoring guys behind you and the couple in front that never seem to stop kissing and whispering sweet nothings into each other's ears. With an HDTV, you can have a theater experience, without all the annoying things that people normally experience when watching movies in a theater.

An interesting point to note, is that when you are watching a program on a sixteen to 9 (16:9) screen, you are actually making use of your peripheral vision. The use of your peripheral vision will definitely make you feel more engaged and engrossed in the experience, as though you are part of the program that you are watching.

The director of ABC’s Monday night football recently did a feed about HDTV, where he vouched for the wonderful experiences that HDTVs can bring. According to the director, once you look at the pictures on your HDTV, you will become entranced, because you can actually see more than what is really shown.

Now in terms of football, the sixteen to nine (16:9) aspect ratio makes a big difference. If the old four to three (4:3) aspect ratio is used, it was often a very tricky situation to have the defense covered. But in an HDTV, they are already in your picture, so you can actually get to see more of the play, and also more of the development of the play. Pretty neat, huh?
